ในการสอบแข่งขันครูผู้ช่วย สพฐ. ภาค ก วิชาทักษะภาษาอังกฤษ หัวข้อ English Expressions และ Functions of Language (สำนวนภาษาอังกฤษและหน้าที่ของภาษา) เป็นหัวข้อที่วัดความเข้าใจเชิงปฏิบัติการสื่อสาร โดยข้อสอบมักยกประโยคพูดขึ้นมาแล้วถามว่า "The speaker is..." หรือ "What function does the expression perform?"

Could you close the door? แปลว่า ช่วยปิดประตูให้หน่อย เจตนาคือ Making a request ไม่ใช่ถามความสามารถ
- แยกแยะ Request กับ Permission ให้ขาด:
Could you help me?→ ขอให้ "อีกฝ่าย" ทำ = RequestCould I leave early?→ ขอให้ "ตัวเอง" ทำ = Permission
- แยกแยะ Offer กับ Suggestion:
Shall I carry this for you?→ ฉันเสนอจะช่วยทำให้ = OfferShall we take a break?→ ชวนให้พวกเราทำร่วมกัน = Suggestion
- สังเกตระดับความสุภาพ (Tone & Softeners): คำว่า possibly, might want to, I'm afraid, I see your point, but... ช่วยลดความกระด้างและเพิ่มความสุภาพ (Polite / Diplomatic)
- ระวัง Modal Verbs หลายความหมาย: must ไม่ได้แปลว่า "ต้อง" เสมอไป หากตามด้วย Adjective มักเป็นการอนุมาน (Deduction) เช่น You must be exhausted.
- คำว่า "most appropriate" คือเลือกคำตอบที่ถูกกาลเทศะที่สุด: ต้องตรง Function + ถูกบริบท + สุภาพเป็นธรรมชาติ
